Today I went diving. The first dive was between Isla Chorros and Isla Damas. A current-y channel, deep dive, low visibility, super cold… Got to see 1 sea lion.
The second dive was in front of these beautiful rocks of the Isla Chorros, all covered in penguins, cormorants, boobies… I wondered why the fuck would I go under water when my views over water were so amazing. In I went, short dive, cold, better visibility because it was shallower. Large school of fish, some beautiful sponges. Did I mention cold?
My reg was loose and air was leaking from the second gage and I was not able to tighten it in the water. So my dive was short.
The boat ride was amazing tho, both there and back.
I was a little sad about substandard dives, blaming myself for not preparing better, walking down the beach intent on hitting these gorgeous sand beaches north of the village when I ran into this backpacker that I met in Pan de Azucar. I was really happy to see him as I was feeling unsettled about my dives so having someone to prattle with felt good. He joined me on the walk to the beaches. The walk ended up being almost 2 hours. But it was gorgeous: through the desert, over the cliffs, past flocks of birds, up and down… When we finally got to the beach, a cold Humboldt wind hit and no diving in the still-warm sand was helping keep us warm. We headed back and went straight to an empanada kiosk where my buddy treated me to empanadas and an Escudo. Escudo is a working-class cheap beer but it tastes good. Especially with empanadas, after a hike and some diving upsets…
We then went to the village dock and set there watching the fishermen, birds, sky and water until the sun set.
